Landfills

In the last few months, I have been thinking about how to get rid of landfills as they are causing big disputes around the world... In Toronto, we ship our garbage to Michigan and even the USA is saying we don't want your garbage, and are trying to block us from sending our garbage there... Toronto has a goal of 100% no garbage by 2010, but that plan seems farer and farer away everyday... Now Toronto is trying to find a new landfill, but why do we need to search for a new one, when we can try and ramp up new ways of using garbage for good. Not only is Toronto having trouble, but many other places around the world are facing the same problems, and with no luck on how to solve the trash problem. Look at Suhodol a village near the Bulgarian capitol Sofia, they are having a trash crisis, not knowing where their garbage will go at the end of october, when the main landfill is closed.

Well with all these talks about how to get rid of garbage by burning them or just recycling more... We need to look at every piece of garbage going out, and see how much can already be put in other areas... Many people throw out things that can already be recycled in their area, like clothes, or paper, or even cans... People are just lazy, and don't want to find or get up when a garbage bin is nearby. We need to combine recycle and garbage bins so people can open their minds... In Toronto, they have very few recycle bins around the city as they feel that they don't have enough money... I have seen tons of garbage bins that are full of bottles, cans, paper, and if a recycle bin was nearby then they would be used...

Educating people to recycle is a good way and by talking to them about keeping their recyclables until they can find a recycling bin... Not everyone is going to be a super recycler, but we need to educate people to do more for this world... Most of the time, just hiring volunteers to pick up the trash and recycling is a good start with the cities help on educating them.. Even the littlest thing helps everyone out and less time is spent wasted on small garbage problems but on bigger garbage issues..
