Light Pollution

I remember going to Cornell in Ithaca, New York, USA and when we were there once, my brother Omar talked about how Light Pollution is bad for the city... For that the city got rid of street lights to take out the pollution that goes into the air with them.. Well I was thinking about that today, and was thinking Toronto has so many street lights, and would be really cool to get rid of all of them, but too many crashes would happen.. To get rid of light pollution, you can do that in your house, there are so many people who leave lights on when they are not in the room anymore.. Turn off a light if you are not in that room anymore, but people are still unaware they let lights on... The best thing to do is what Bill Gates does in his house, where if you go into a room the light turns on, and then you leave the light goes off.. All of this is automatic and there is no need for you to turn off anything, which is better and saves more energy..

Well all of this light pollution is just light that people don't need and putting too much into the air.. Even animals have trouble with the lights, birds fly into windows at night because of the lights and not becoming able to fly right.. We should be able to use lower lighting, and just not every light in the office or house or anywhere.. I feel that if we get rid of all the unwanted lights in the world, would cost billions of dollars.. I still think that would be the best thing as we would save more money in the long run, and maybe blackouts wouldn't happen at much..

When was the last time in a city you were able to look up and see stars? I have seen them before, but all the time I am thinking is that an airplane or a star or what? We need to get back our skies, and just have an amazing place to live in and walk in...

i completely agree shawn. i remember being able to see the stars so clearly in ithaca, and now it's quite a bit harder, though i must say california is quite good with light pollution. they don't have a lot of street lights.

on the east coast things are completely different. they have a lot of light on the streets and in houses -- it's really hard to see stars in toronto. i agree that people need to get smarter with lights, and maybe the best way to do that is with smarter lights that turn on and off as people enter and leave rooms.

good idea to remind us of this!
