Public Radio

Well, as we all know CBC Radio in Canada was locked out for 7 weeks, and just today started back up finally with Hockey Night in Canada.. As we all know CBC is funded by the public in Canada, and has done a pretty good job in the past... In the last couple of years, CBC has been going downhill as no one really saw a need to revamp shows to meet the publics needs.. Well as soon as the lock out happened CBC employees started to explode with podcasts, and blogs with ideas on how to make the whole station better in the long run.. Hopefully these ideas will come into play with CBC later on...

In recent years, I have seen more public radio on the airwaves, which means better music, and knowledge on the radio... When I was in Katimavik, I helped out a radio station called University of Winnipeg CKUW 95.9 FM, that was having a fundraiser, and got to meet some really cool people... Seems public radio is hitting the airwaves, and not having to listen to companies on what is good and what is bad... Also with podcasting hitting the internet, more radio is going to pop up and give a different view on radio, which will help everyone out... A big one, that I recently have been listening to is Rabble Radio, which seems to be a leftist website but in some parts I see the right in there.. One show I have been listening to lots is on University of Toronto Radio, which is called Alternative Radio.. This takes speakers from all kinds of area who speak on many different issues, and gives them around 40-45 mins to speak, and then lets the audience from wherever the person is speaking to ask questions...

The only problem with all these public radio stations, is that most of them are leftist radio, and don't include the view of the right... We need to have balance radio or more and more people will stop listening to public radio and just accept big business media...

shawn,

any opinion on some of the cbc blogs and podcasts? i must say, i love podcasts. for those people who have an ipod, or something similar, podcasts are a god-send. i listen to a bunch of different ones, but the ones i particularly like now are the KQED Forum podcast (an interview show about tons of things), Democracy Now (a left-leaning show that explores issues from a perspective that you rarely see in the mainstream media) and Today, from BBC radio 4. BBC interviewers are quite intense! they really try to wring answers out of their catch.

As for your point about right-leaning podcasts and public radio shows, they are springing up, and do exist. you should google around and ask around in toronto -- i'm sure you'll find something.
